Call for Proposals - JRLE

The Journal of Research on Leadership Education and the UCEA Center for Academic Leadership announce the 1st Annual Emerging Scholar Competition for Outstanding Research on Academic Leadership. According to Adrianna Kezar, "the full promise of the revolution in leadership scholarship remains unfulfilled" (JRLE, 2006). The UCEA Center for Academic Leadership and the Journal of Research on Leadership Education, both sponsored by the University Council for Educational Administration, seek to respond to Kezar's challenge by promoting broad-based studies of higher education leadership, including studies of department chairs, deans, and other academic leaders.
Eligible Participants: Gradate students and junior faculty affiliated with Higher Education Administration programs or Educational Leadership programs. Our goal is to support the development of the next generation of scholars so we strongly recommend that students take a lead role in the preparation of manuscripts.
Manuscript Criteria: The Journal of Research on Leadership Education is dedicated to promoting rigorous scholarship on the teaching, learning, and assessing of leadership preparation and practice in the multiplicity of educational settings, and therefore seeks empirical work that examines the political and contextual issues that impact leadership education.
Examples of eligible research might include: Studies of department chairs or deans within or across a variety of disciplines that examine the origins of individual's leadership dispositions and practices in order to advance understanding of ways in which we develop leadership education for academic administrators. Research that explores the design and impacts of undergraduate leadership education programs. International comparative studies that explore the preparation of future institutional leaders. For example: Many institutional leaders in developing nations are educated in the US or the UK. In what way does preparation in a western-based leadership/administration program intersect with the leadership perspectives of the native culture?
The editors also strongly encourage co-authored, cross-disciplinary pieces that: Establish links between higher education administration scholarship and institutional leadership practice. Expand the knowledge base for developing or assessing leadership education in higher education organizations. Examine the philosophical underpinnings of higher educational administrators in diverse national and/or international contexts. Compare the 'theories-in-use' of leadership program framers, to theories-in-use of program implementers.
Timelines: Submission Deadline: June 30, 2009. Award Announcement: October 15, 2009 Selection of Awardee: Eligibility for peer review will be determined by the UNLV/JRLE Editorial team. Manuscripts that meet the criteria noted above will advance to full review by selected JRLE Editorial Board members affiliated with Higher Education Administration programs. The manuscript review form is available at http://www.ucea.org/JRLE/submission.php. The recommendations of the JRLE reviewers will inform the Editorial team, who will make the final selection. The author(s) of the winning manuscript will be notified by email and recognized at the 2009 Fall Conferences of ASHE and UCEA. The awardee will receive a cash award and the manuscript will be published in a forthcoming issue of JRLE. For any additional questions, contact the JRLE staff at jrle@unlv.edu

Call for Proposals: Research on Spirituality in Higher Ed

Spirituality in Higher Education The Spirituality in Higher Education project at UCLA is now soliciting proposals from investigators who would like to conduct original research using a new and unique national longitudinal database on undergraduates. Housed at UCLA's Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) and supported by the John Templeton Foundation, this project has assembled a database that focuses on students' spiritual and religious development during the first three undergraduate years. This longitudinal database, which includes 14,527 students attending 136 institutions of all types, offers a unique opportunity to study a wide range of issues relating to students' beliefs, values, and spiritual and religious life. The purpose of this competition is to stimulate and encourage the study of students' spiritual development in higher education by engaging qualified scholars in original research that utilizes these data.
Stipends will be awarded to 10-15 recipients in the amount of $10,000 each. Recipients will be retained as project consultants to produce an original research paper based on analyses of the data. The deadline for receipt of proposals is March 1, 2009. Notifications of awards will be made by April 15, 2009. For information concerning the application process and available data, please go to the project website at www.spirituality.ucla.edu. If you have further questions, please contact Chris Collins at spirit@gseis.ucla.edu
